Formula: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. The by-views version divides by views instead and is the number most platforms show internally.

In one answer

Engagement rate is total interactions (likes + comments + shares + saves) divided by followers, or by views, times 100. This free calculator computes both and compares the result with the 2026 platform averages from Socialinsider's 69-million-video study: 2.60 percent on TikTok, 0.45 percent on Instagram Reels and 0.30 percent on YouTube Shorts.

Use the by-followers rate to compare accounts and the by-views rate to compare posts. A post can have a low rate by followers and a high rate by views when it reached far beyond the existing audience.

How the engagement rate calculator works

1

Pick the platform

TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. The benchmark changes with the platform.

2

Enter the post numbers

Followers at the time of the post, and the post's views, likes, comments, shares and saves. Views are optional but unlock the by-views rate.

3

Read both rates

By followers for account comparisons, by views for post comparisons, with a verdict against the 2026 average.

4

Improve the number

Post more often in the formats and lengths that perform, then measure which posts convert. Fastlane does all three from a website URL.

How to calculate engagement rate

The standard formula divides a post's total interactions by the account's follower count and multiplies by 100. Interactions usually means likes, comments, shares and saves; some tools include only likes and comments, which is why published benchmarks are not always comparable. The by-views (or by-reach) version divides by the number of people who actually saw the post and is closer to what platforms optimise for internally.

Both versions are useful. By followers tells you how engaged your audience is relative to its size. By views tells you how good the post was relative to the distribution it received, which is the fairer measure on TikTok, where most views come from people who do not follow you.

What is a good engagement rate in 2026?

The largest current benchmark is Socialinsider's 2026 study of 69 million TikTok, Reels and Shorts videos: 2.60 percent on TikTok, 0.45 percent on Instagram Reels and 0.30 percent on YouTube Shorts. Brand accounts posting 15 to 30 second TikToks benchmark higher, around 6 percent. Anything above the platform average is good; anything double it is excellent. Our short-form video benchmarks guide has the full data with sources.

Raising your engagement rate

Engagement follows format, length and cadence. Short TikToks earn the highest rate, 45 to 60 second Reels earn the most on Instagram, and accounts that post more see more views per post. Fastlane generates content from your website URL in four formats, publishes it natively to TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts on a schedule, and attributes signups and sales to each post, so you can optimise for the metric that pays rather than the one that flatters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the engagement rate formula?

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) divided by followers, times 100. The by-views version divides by views or reach instead.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

The 2026 average is 2.60 percent according to Socialinsider. Above that is good; brand accounts posting short videos reach around 6 percent.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

The 2026 Reels average is 0.45 percent; carousels average slightly higher at 0.55 percent. Above those figures is good.

Should I calculate engagement by followers or by views?

By followers to compare accounts, by views to compare individual posts. On TikTok, where most views come from non-followers, by views is the fairer measure of a post.
