What changed in Wan 2.6

Wan 2.1 and 2.2 were downloadable open-weight releases. Wan 2.5 and 2.6 shipped as closed, commercial API products. 2.6 adds self-insertion of a personal likeness and voice, stronger multi-shot storytelling, and the efficiency-oriented Mixture-of-Experts architecture. Wan 2.6 is no longer the current version: Alibaba's Tongyi Lab released Wan 2.7 in April 2026, adding a Thinking Mode that plans the composition before generating, first and last frame control, reference-to-video and instruction-based video editing. Wan 2.7 is listed on OpenRouter at $0.10 per second. Check whether your provider still serves 2.6 before building on it.
