Sora 2: what it was, and what to use now that it has shut down

Sora 2 was OpenAI's text-to-video model with native audio and the Cameo likeness feature. The consumer app closed on 26 April 2026 and the API stopped accepting requests on 24 September 2026. Here is what it did, why it mattered for short-form video, and what a marketer should build on instead.

What Sora 2 is

Sora 2 is OpenAI's text-to-video and image-to-video model, launched 30 September 2025, that generated 10 to 25 second 1080p clips with synchronized dialogue, sound effects and physically believable motion, plus a consent-based Cameo feature for inserting a real person's likeness. OpenAI shut the consumer app down on 26 April 2026 and removed the Videos API, including every sora-2 and sora-2-pro alias and dated snapshot, on 24 September 2026; no Sora endpoint accepts requests now.

For marketers the headline is not the specs, it is the date. Anything still built on Sora 2 is already broken, and the models linked from this page are the realistic replacements.

What changed in Sora 2

Versus the original Sora from February 2024, Sora 2 added synchronized native audio, the consent-based Cameo feature, materially better physics and a social remix feed, and made 1080p the default. OpenAI has not announced a Sora 3; it is winding the commercial product down and keeping Sora as an internal world-model research effort.

How to get Sora 2

Formerly the Sora iOS and Android apps, sora.chatgpt.com and the OpenAI API (sora-2 and sora-2-pro). None of these are available any more: the API was the last route and it shut down on 24 September 2026.

What Sora 2 means for short-form marketers

Sora 2 was genuinely strong at hyperreal short clips with lip-synced dialogue, which made it a favourite for scrappy, meme-native ad tests on TikTok and Reels. The watermark on every frame limited how organic the output could look, and the clip length meant stitching for anything past 25 seconds.

Its launch is also the category's cautionary tale on rights: copyrighted characters were opt-out at launch and flipped to opt-in within 72 hours after a backlash. Any brand using generative video should assume that kind of policy can change under it overnight.

The practical lesson is to build the workflow, not the model: keep generation swappable, and put the durable investment into the accounts, the publishing cadence and the attribution, which outlive any single model.

Where Sora 2 still needs care

  • The whole product is discontinued: app closed 26 April 2026, API shut down 24 September 2026
  • Every output carries a visible moving watermark plus C2PA metadata
  • Clip length capped around 10 to 25 seconds, no native long-form
  • Cameo requires the subject's consent, which adds friction for UGC-style ads with people who are not the account holder
  • Copyright handling at launch was reactive; rightsholders had to request exclusion

What replaces Sora 2?

For short-form marketing, the realistic replacements are Veo 3.1 for consistency, Kling 3.0 for native 4K and multi-shot clips, Seedance 2.5 for 30-second single generations, and MiniMax H3 for open-weight self-hosting. Each has its own page here.

How long were Sora 2 videos?

Roughly 10 to 25 seconds per generation at 1080p, with synchronized audio.

Did Sora 2 videos have a watermark?

Yes, a visible moving watermark on every output plus C2PA provenance metadata.

Can I still post Sora 2 clips I already made?

Yes. Upload them to Fastlane, schedule them, and publish natively to TikTok, Reels, Shorts and LinkedIn with attribution back to each post.
